PSYC 3310 Chapter 3: Chapter 3
Document Summary
If observers were able to compare the same person lying and telling the truth slightly better able to recognize lie: such advantageous and disadvantageous conditions only move accuracy rates up or down 2% Guilty people who have no faith may not be concerned about lying because they don"t fear detection (not aroused) Research on the polygraph: empirical studies attempting to test the accuracy of the polygraph into 2 categories: lab or field studies, lab studies use mock crimes. Randomly assigned to guilty or innocent suspects. All suspects told to deny any involvement in the crime. Adv: we know for certain who is telling the truth and who is lying, know if examiners were right or wrong in their judgments: field studies situations in which people are suspects in a real crime. Since the stakes are so high the emotional arousal measured by the polygraph is likely to be quite high.
