Self Enhancement and Self-Esteem!
-self enhancement: motivation to view oneself positively !
self-esteem: the positivitiy of your overall evaluation of yourself !
self-serving biases: tendencies for people to exaggerate how good they think
they are !
people have biased views of themselves because they are motivated to view
themselves positively !
-downward social comparison: comparing your performance to the persformance
of someone who is doing even worse than you!
-compensatory self-enhancement: acknowledging a poor performance, but
thinking about something else that you do well at (unrelated)!
- Discounting: reducing the importance of the domain in which there was poor
performance !
-external attribution: attributing the cause of their actions to something outside
themselves !
-basking in the reflected glory: emphasizing our connection to successfully
performing others and experience positivity in their success as our own (ingroup)!
-there is a positive relationship between independent self-construals and self-esteem
within a variety of cultures !
-independence and self-enhancement are related, however there has been evidence
in some collectivistic cultures of comparable levels of self-enhancement!
-westerners have stronger motivation to not only enhance their individual self, but
also their group self!
-indepenedent cultures find their successes more memorable while interdependent
people remember their failures more (use more external reasons for their successes)!
