Dating is common; means that two people are romantically involved and spend substantial amounts of time together. People may be convinced that they can tell what a man and woman wants in a partner. Young adolescents emphasize physical attributes; older adolescents emphasize their compatibility with their partner the ideal characteristics also depend on whether people are discussing a sexual partner or a marriage partner. Ex. in a study, people measured desirability for (a) a partner for sexual activity, and (b) a partner for long-term relationship such as marriage. Both women and men emphasized physical attractiveness when judging a sexual partner. However, physical attractiveness is somewhat more important for men research confirms that physical appearance is extremely important when people first meet a potential romantic partner. Attractiveness and slimness are especially important when men are judging women. Men are more likely than women to emphasize physical attractiveness in describing an ideal partner.
