PSYC 3480 Chapter 2: Psychology of Women - Chapter Two
Document Summary
Chapter two - gender stereotypes and other gender biases. We live in a sea of stereotypes. I. e. ethnicity, country of origin, family income, age, and gender. Other stereotypes are less prominent, but many people are persuaded that they are completely valid. I. e. a person"s birth order, amount of education, political beliefs. Some stereotypes are unique to a particular population. Stereotypes - beliefs and assumptions that we associate with particular groups of people. Gender stereotypes - the beliefs that we associate with females and males in other words, stereotypes refer to our thoughts about a social group -- these thoughts may not correspond to reality. Ex. men may be less likely than women to ask for directions to a destination: however, this stereotype does not apply to every man. People differ widely from one another, no matter which psychological characteristic you are considering. - no stereotype can accurately describe every woman, or every man.
