PSYC 3480 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Hormone Replacement Therapy, Vaginal Lubrication, Ageism
Document Summary
Attitudes toward older women: ageism -- a bias on age, most often a bias against elderly people. Ex. negative stereotypes, myths, emotions, attitudes, and discrimination. Ex. young people often think that old people are grouchy and tired and that they feel sorry for themselves. In a study, people selected fewer positive stereotypes for the older group of women. If a double standard of aging exists, then people should evaluate an old woman much more negatively than a young woman. People would rather interact with older males than older females. In other words, people rated old men as being much less competent than young men. In contrast, they rated old women and young women the same. One study reported that older women were much more critical than older men about how their aging bodies looked. The film industry shows the double standard of aging because they feature older men far more than older women, typically as the romantic leads.
