88 views9 pages

Document Summary

These behaviours include excessive aggressiveness, impulsiveness, and lying. People with this disorder also believe that they are perfectly well adjusted, but everyone else in the world has a problem: depression and eating disorders are more common for women. Depression: major depressive disorder -- frequent episodes of hopelessness and low self-esteem. Explanations for the gender difference in depression: factors no longer considered relevant. Gender differences in biological factors could explain why women are more likely than men to be depressed. Could be traced to biochemical factors, hormonal fluctuations, or some genetic factor associated with having two x chromosomes. However, biological factors do not convincingly explain the greater prevalence of depression in women: gender differences in seeking therapy. It is possible that women and men are equally depressed in the general population but that women are simply more likely to seek help from a therapist. Women are still much more likely than men to be depressed: diagnostic biases in therapists.
