chapter 5 1. 4 kinds of cognitive abilities where there’s evidence of gender differences 1) memory - women score higher 2) verbal ability - women score higher but more similarities than differences General Verbal Ability - females have greater verbal fluency: naming objects that meet certain criteria Data about Reading Disabilities - males more likely to have language problems - reading disability: poor reading skills that are not accounted for by the level of general intelligence - 3) mathematics ability - females receive higher grades in math courses but male get better in SAT math section - SAT has high overall validity: measures what it’s supposed to measure 4) spatial ability : understanding, perceiving and manipulating shapes and figures Spatial Visualization - finding pattern w/in picture - test same Spatial Perception - participants asked to identify horizontal or vertical location - -no difference Mental Rotation : ability to rotate 2/3 dimensional figures rapidly and accurately — males respond faster than females 2. gender similarities: 1) general intelligence: males show greater variability 2) complex cognitive tasks: 3. Genetic explanation for spatial ability - recessive trait carried on x chromosome 4. lateralization - brain divided into 2 parts, left is faster and more accurate on language. right is faster and more accurate on spatial.
