PSYC 3480 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Jean-Jacques Rousseau, John Stuart Mill, Gender Role
Document Summary
Chapter 2 - gender stereotypes and gender biases. Stereotypes - the beliefs and assumptions that we associate with particular groups of people. Gender stereotypes - the beliefs that we associate with females and males - refer to our thoughts about social groups. Some stereotypes may partly be right - ex: men hesitate less when asking for directions whereas women hesitate more. Prejudice - an emotional reaction or attitude towards a particular group of people - usually negative attitudes - but can be positive. Discrimination - refers to biased treatment of a particular group of people. Ex: a prejudice attitude of women being incapable of leadership can lead to discrimination by prevent women with executive positions. Before the 1960 there was no field of women"s history. Not much known about what has happened in the past and how women were involved/played a role- some evidence found by buried bodies found with weapons suggesting women may have fought alongside men.
