PSYC 3480 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Menstrual Cycle, Ageism, Sandwich Generation
Document Summary
Ageism: bias based on age, most often against elderly ex. negative stereotypes, myths, emotions, attitudes, discrimination resulting in people treating them poorly. Ironic because it is the only stigmatized group that everyone will join unless they die young. These negative attitudes can be attributed to oneself as they grow older. Not usually represented and when they are focus is on things like cooking shows. When portrayed in ads it is for age-concealing products that make them feel inadequate and these messages can be internalized. Elderly women judged more harshly than elderly men ex. wrinkles on man seen as maturity but negative on a woman. Personality characteristics: fe(cid:449)er positi(cid:448)e stereotypes for older (cid:449)o(cid:373)e(cid:374) a(cid:374)d a larger (cid:862)drop(cid:863) i(cid:374) young old women (cp to men) on generosity/friendliness and willingness to interact with them. But there was less drop for women in competence intelligence, memory, etc.
