Close relationships are essential to good mental health and well-being. Friends are a major source of support and self-esteem throughout an individuals life. Most teenagers around the world still chose members of their own gender as friends and as best friends. Girls report more satisfaction with their same-gender friendships than do boys. Intimacy the sharing of thoughts and feelings with someone else is a key characteristics of adolescent friendships especially those of girls. Girls had one-on-one friendship characterized by self-disclosure and emotional support. Boys are more likely to have larger, less intimate friendships groups that focus on shared group activities (mostly sports and competitive games) Women"s friendships in adolescence are more intimate and emotionally supportive than men"s, which leads them to hold higher expectations and standards for their same-sex friends than young men do. Women operate face-to-face by sharing thoughts and feelings and men develop closeness side-by- side by sharing activities.
