Vaillant"s theory of defence mechanisms: vaillant proposed that the ego defence mechanisms as becoming increasingly adaptive in adulthood, helping people come with life"s challenges, ranging from stress at work to discrimination to marital unhappiness, psychotic. In one study, older adults who underestimated their future selves had higher well-being a year later than those who overestimated their future selves.
