The extended family: societal functions. parents, children, grandparents, and other relatives performed most. Nuclear-family model: breadwinner husband, homemaker wife, and children living together. : husband, wife, and children in independent household. : a multiplicity of forms new or altered family forms continue to emerge: post-modern family and develop = structural variability. Ie. single parents, gay or lesbian couples, interracial couples. Exert social control over individuals: patterned and largely predictable ways of thinking and behaving beliefs, values, attitudes, and norms that are recognized around vital aspects of group live and serve essential social functions. Meant to meet people"s basic needs and enable society to survive. At any given time, majority of kids live in two-parent households. Many kids experience of variety of living arrangements when they"re young. Kids are more likely to live with a grandparent today than in the past. Although most parents are employed, kids are more likely than the general population to be living in poverty.
