Women"s involvement in the workforce really took off in the 20th century. Reasons for working: supporting themselves and dependents, personal satisfaction enhances self esteem and increases overall well being. Occupational segregation: pronounced tendency for men and women to be employed in different types of jobs. Jobs typically held by men and women differ within major occupational categories, with men more likely to hold the upper-level jobs. Women are more likely to occupy the lower paying ranks. Sheryl sandberg: blames women for not pursing their careers more rigorously and not aiming high enough. Instructs women to lean in by working harder, taking on career advancing responsibilities and reaching for new opportunities instead of holding back: critics argue that suck advice ignores the millions of working women who aren"t privileged.
