Document Summary

Visual systems are especially sensitive to detecting movement. Humans process a remarkable amount of visual information, which keeps about one-third of the cerebral cortex busy and analyzing it. The visual system extends from the eye to the brain. The vertebrate eye acts in some ways like a camera. The eye is an elaborate structure with optical functions, capturing light and projecting detailed images of the external world onto the back of the eye. The retina transduces light into neural signals. Cornea: the transparent outer layer of the eye, whose curvature is fixed. Lens: a structure in the eye that helps focus an image on the retina: ciliary muscles: one of the muscles that control the shape of the lens inside the eye, focusing an image on the retina. Accommodation: the process by which the ciliary muscles adjust the lens to focus a sharp image on the retina. In young people, the most common vision problem is myopia.
