7. Discuss the problem of racial and ethnic discrimination in the workplace using the concept of  racialization and systemic discrimination. 1. 3 R’s • Race: social construction – we’re all biologically the same • Racism: practice of interiorizing others • Racialization:  the process of classifying others – to distinguish them from ourselves o Those racialized in Canada: visible minorities   Results in precarious work – which immigrants take those jobs  In contrast: Race stays constant, racialization changes according to society 2. Systematic discrimination • Involves a pattern or practice, policy, or class case where the alleged discrimination has a broad impact  on an industry, profession, company, or geographic area o It restricts targeted individuals from minimum labour wage o Blocks movement into better jobs 3. Colonization of Canada • 1600s Canada colonized by French – forced aboriginals to participate in pre­industrial labour market • Traditional economy of aboriginals were destroyed due to industrialization o The decline in demand for the aboriginals = decline in wage­labour opportunities  Job availability – But market discrimination th • In 19  century after Canada was industrialized, the French­Canadian became underrepresented in the  better paying job positions 4. Historical Patterns • Discrimination to Chinese o They were paid 1/2 to 2/3 of what everyone else was making  o Labour unions restricted them to enter higher paid trad
