Document Summary

In her book are prisons obsolete? (2003), angela davis ofers a criique of the prison industrial complex in support of the prison-aboliionist movement. Contrary to them being natural, davis argues that an aboliion of the prisons is long overdue. Prisons, like previous inefecive systems of punishment should be abolished in favor of restoraive jusice the efeciveness of which is supported by many research studies. Just as the death penalty was at one ime abolished, so can be the prison movement (davis, p. 9). The prison aboliion movement has a long history-one that dates back to the historical appearance of the prison as the main form of punishment. Unfortunately, prison aboliionists are oten dismissed as utopians. This happens because people take prisons for granted, and rarely consider the consequences they actually have, or their eicacy in reducing crime. People think that prisons can serve as an expedient short-term cure to not only ofer jobs and develop communiies but solve crime.
