SOSC 1375 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Fundamental Justice, Socalled, Welfare Fraud
Document Summary
Massive reforms to various federal and provincial social policies over the past decade have significantly re-shaped both the physical and ideological landscape of poverty. Public/private divide occupies a central place in liberal thought. The relationship between the public and the prjvate is often understood, and played out, in a deeply dichotomous way. The public is configured as the antithesis, or opposite, of the private. Particular attributes are associated with each, and these attributes themselves are often paired in similarly dichotomous ways. So, for example, the public/private split is often applied in relation to work and family; work as public, family as private. General structure of the categorization is one in which there is a solid and bright line separating two spheres of life and of activity. General categorization structure is used to delineate actual activities, spaces and practices it is applied inconsistently, creating a great deal of ambiguity.
