Document Summary
Speech sound disorder- an impairment of an individual"s sound system that results in a significant problem with speech sound production, causing it to differ from age- and culturally based expectations. Arise from an articulation impairment or phonological impairment. An articulation impairment is the inability to articulate sounds correctly, often includes distortions that do not result in a phonetic or meaning difference: referred to as a phonological impairment. Involves the rules that govern sound patterns in a given language. A person"s sound system may not permit production of word final consonants, particularly obstruents, which are consonants produced with obstruction in the vocal tract and include stops, fricatives, and affricates. Resulting in homonymy- two words sounding the same but having different meanings. Also referred to as a phonemic impairments. Child"s phonological system may be restricted to noncontinuant obstruents. Prohibits the occurrence of fricatives in the inventory. Inability to produce is also a phonemic impairment.
