Document Summary

Impairment in the ability to swallow is known as dysphagia. Individuals with dysphagia are at risk for choking and blockage of the airway, aspiration of foods into their lungs and pneumonia. What are feeding and swallowing disorders: the normal swallow. Deglutition is the complex neuromuscular act of moving substances from the oral cavity to the esophagus. The substance being moved in called the bolus. 580 times daily without even thinking about it. Starts as the food or liquid enters the mouth. Involves containing the material in the oral cavity by closing the lips and then manipulating the food or liquid into a cohesive ball. Chewing or mastication occurs as the lips, tongue, teeth, mandible, and cheeks work cooperatively to grind the food into a manageable texture to swallow. Purpose is to move the bolus to the rear of the oral cavity. Begins as the tongue propels the bolus to the back of the mouth.
