The communication principles we follow today were taught in ancient. The study of communications was called rhetoric and the teachers were called rhetoricians. Public communication was an important tool in problem-solving. Rhetoric = study of the available means of persuasion. important figures: plato, socrates, aristotle, cicero, quintilian. Sophists: teachers of how to speak in public for a fee, plato didn"t like because they weren"t interested in searching for the truth. The main reason for communications: educated argument. Response to christianity: rhetoric second to theology. Mistrusted normal uses of rhetoric and argued that truth could be obtained only through discourse that was solidly grounded in human rationality. Picked up the above ideas and combined w classical rhetoricians. Communication is a process of acting on information. Speech communication is a human process through which we make sense out of the worlds and share that sense with others.
