Faith in capitalism, industrialization, and the idea of progress endured , but was challenged by internal critics, especially women, wage workers, and frustrated nationalists. Strikes and political assassination and the rise of increasingly powerful popular political movements threatened the status quo. Competition between empires increasingly touched off armed conflicts.
