-What kids really need are adults who care
-Survey was given by Search Institute to students for research purposes in Minnesota
-What kids need to succeed was published in 1994 based on the survey results
-Financial resources, genetics, and trauma cause issues
-Assets increase in value over time and provide a sense of security they are resources
teens can draw again and again
-These assets are cumulative (the more the better)
-External assets are things in a young persons environment that support, nurture, set
boundaries, and use of time
-External assets: Support, empowerment, boundaries & expectations, constructive use
of time
-Internal assets are attitudes, values and competencies
-Internal assets: Commitment to learn, positive values, social competencies, positive
identity
-Number of assets decline as kids age
-Young people who have more assets are less likely to get involved in problem
behaviors
-More assets= the better
