Ego: get what you want while following social norms. Stealing when person isn"t looking as opposed to outright stealing. Wait until after class to get your own. Free oating anxiety: get rid of anxiety through defense mechanism; unbalance. Example: you"re loud because your mom is loud. Humanistic: assume we strive for perfection & while we strive, our personality develops. Cognitive: assume our personalities are shaped by our external environment. Reaction formation: switching unacceptable impulses into its opposite. Regression formation: movement back in time when faced with stress. Example: a child may suck their thumb again when they are hospitalized. Example: thief thinks everyone else is a thief. Rationalization: offering self-justifying explanations instead of admitting to the behavioral cause.
