Apology (defending position) Socrates was a perfect philosopher, was not very kind Liked to push people to a certain extreme Keeps asking questions deeper until you don’t want to talk anymore Trying to defend himself in front of the jury Chose to die by means of poison Did not leave because he was fighting for certain ideas, so if he ran away it would not prove his  ideas Still studying his philosophy after so long Only was concerned about finding the truth, was willing to sacrifice his life Was accused of: Criticizing their religion Introducing new gods Bad example for the youth Pg 22 (toward end of first paragraph) he’s only here for the truth Pg 23 understands lawyers here are good speakers and no how to prove or twist words, he is a  simple man but all he cares about is truth Sophists claim they have the answers, but in reality do not Have to pay them to learn 9/9/13 Socrates never wrote book, all we know is written about Plato What we know is already an interpretation of him Use this dialogue to discover how Socrates found wisdom Socrates only concern is the truth Sophists claim they have the answers, but in reality do not Socrates says not like preistocratics  Oracle of Delphi (Chaerephon) heard answer that Socrates is the wisest man Socrates knows he doesn’t know First point to find wisdom, is to have the desire/wish to find wisdom Then go around and keep asking knowing you don’t have the answer, or else you wouldn’t go  around looking for it Defense against first point Politicians believe they know all and as a result they are the most deficient Poets haven an inborn talent instead of the use of knowledge Craftsmen only good in their own field but think they know everything Defense against second point Turns around accusation of corrupting youth, and asks who improves them Improve by knowing laws And politicians/lawyers know best about laws so should be improving them Only way to make
