Document Summary

In the story a & p a character named sammy learns a difficult lesson. Araby, the unnamed narrator goes through an epiphany. Though the themes and characters of the story are very similar, the main difference arises at the end. At the end of their respective stores, the boys have both come to a conclusion that the world is not how they make it out to be. It is only sammy however who benefits from realizing this. A & p takes place in a super market and is told by sammy, a cashier who has been working there too long. The boy from araby lives in a very dark depressing environment. The general plot of the short stories is important because in the stories both main characters believe that they themselves are above everybody. What this means is that in their own world view, they are somehow special and therefore matter more than the rest of the people there.
