What is an Organization?
An organization is where people interact and coordinate in order to achieve a purpose.
Many different types of organizations
No definitive classification to explain the various types
All are varied, are formed for different lengths of time and different purposes
Study of OB looks at the similarities and differences among people and their interactions
in organizations ****
oCommunity of practice - group of people who share an interest in a topic and
interact together on the topic
oHybrid - combines two or more forms of organizations
oNetwork - has shared responsibility, equal status among members, shaped more
by the activities of its members
oBureaucratic - specialized roles, and a command and control structure with
formal hierarchy
oProfessional - public or private organization that consists of people with strong
professional norms and similar professions
oRepresentative democratic - based on the principles of employee autonomy,
participation, and even profit- sharing ownership
What is Organizational Behavior?

oDraws from different disciplines in order to understand organizations from
multiple perspectives and viewpoints
oPsychology,
Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches
oQualitative approaches explore situations and seek a deeper understanding of a
situation through the use of detailed methods such as focus groups, interviews
and observation
oQuantitative approaches try to predict results and identify factors that are
universal. They rely on surveys and other large scale data collection techniques
Applied
oSeeks to improve organizations and to make positive impacts on people while
solving practical problems that people face in the workplace. It seeks to answer
questions, solve problems, and help organizations achieve goals
oPositive organizational outcomes are effectiveness, job satisfaction,
organizational commitment, reduced absenteeism, and low turnover intention
oNegative organizational outcomes are undesirable behaviors such as unethical
behavior, sabotage, absenteeism, and incivility.
Understanding the Contemporary Organization
Organizations require continued adaptation in order to function effectively in this
environment
