Du bois wrote this to give a sense of what it meant to be black in the 20th century, and define the problem of the 20th century which was the color-line. Of our spiritual strivings- what emancipation meant to them and what was its aftermath. Although they were free they were seen as a problem. Noticed the veil between him and the whites. The black man=seventh son who is born with a veil and gifted second sight(can only see himself through the revelation of the other world) in america(world that yields him no true self-conscious). Double consciousness: sense of always looking at one"s self through the eyes of another(white people), or measuring one"s soul through others. they have two identities- their american identity and their black identity, that never merge. The veil: ability to see life on both sides of the veil but only able to live on one side.
