Filipinos came from a territory of the us-acquired after the spanish-american war. Also aifc-alien ineligible for citizenship, like the chinese, japanese, koreans, and south. On mainland-they were subjected to racism by the white working class. They were seen as a threat in the labor force. In hawaii-they were pitted against the japanese workers on the plantations, but not subjected to as much racism. Stockton was the gathering place for filipinos-they went into either domestic service, fisheries in. They were barred from other jobs, just like the asian immigrant groups who came before them. In 1930-25% employed in domestic service, 9% in fisheries, 60% in agriculture. In alaskan fisheries they didn"t make a lot of money because a large amount was taken out of their pay for food and other expenses. Filipinos were recruited in agriculture because the other immigrant groups had been excluded by the law. They were forced to be bent over for hours every day-mostly asparagus cultivation.
