First indian elected to the british house of commons. The burden grew when the value of silver went down. Defenders of the transfer claimed that it was a fair price for the services provided to the country. Others claimed that it was a removal of resources that otherwise would have been used for internal investment within india. India becomes chief export market for british goods by 1913. India supplied britain with raw materials (e. g. cotton, indigo, jute, oil, rice) By end of 19th century, india"s commercial agriculture tied it to markets and forces beyond its borders. Provided an income to the peasant farmers but drove out sturdy, staple crops that they had depended on for sustenance.
