These similarities led them to think that there are martians. Giovanni schiaparelli > discovered canals on mars that may suggest intelligent life. Geological processes that have shaped mars: mars is larger than moon and mercury but smaller than earth and venus. It has the same amount of land area as earth though. Impact cratering on mars: the southern hemisphere is very elevated and has many craters whereas the northern hemisphere is below the surface level of mars with few craters. This suggests that the southern part is older than northern and the northern must have had early craters covered by geological processes. Volcanism was the most important process in erasing the craters on northern hemisphere.
