Chapter 10: world politics: development: hard to measure & developed and developing sates have different views, goals of development constantly shifting- economic, political, social/cultural, countries not always developing across the entire country. Why care about development: security (realist)- failed states, power vacuums, terrorism, transnational crime, security (liberal)- conserve resources, societies- human security (migration, pandemics), environmental degradation, norms (constructivism)- 40% of the world"s people live on /day or less. Human social development: un millennium development goals for 2015- hunger & poverty, education, Equality, child mortality, maternal health, hiv/aids and other diseases, International- ngos, mncs, non-stat actors/ domestic- non-governmental groups: controversial required accountability seen by ruling elites as subversive . Liberal modernization theory: one pattern of development for all- ldcs develop by shedding traditional institutions. Modernization theory: social/cultural impact- demographic transition to urbanization- death rate goes down but birth rate stays high and population boom- not enough jobs so people leave, critiques of modernization- traditional resistant to change, too euro-centric.
