Emotional experiences vary on dimension- valence: how positive or negative the experience is, arousal: how active or passive the experience is emotion: positive or negative experience that is associated with a particular pattern of physiological activity. Cannon- bard theory: stimuli simultaneously trigger activity in the body and emotional experience in the brain. Emotions happen quickly although body reacts slowly - blush- takes 15-30 sec to happen but you feel embarrassed within seconds. Experience emotion- increase activity amygdala, decrease in cortex. Inhibit emotion- increase activity cortex decrease amygdala. Emotion regulation: strategies people use to influence their own emotional experience. Behavioral strategies- avoiding situations that trigger the unwanted emotion. Cognitive strategies- recrutiing memories that trigger the desired emotion. People don"t know which of these is most effective. They think suppression: inhibiting outward signs of emotion is effective but it isn"t.
