Macbeth Act 4 Scene 1-3
Scene One
• The three witches circle a cauldron, speaking strange enchantments and throwing
unusual ingredients into it.
• Macbeth asks the witches to tell him more about their prophecy to relieve himself
of the paranoia and fear of losing power.
• As ordered by Hecate, the witches show Macbeth visions which enhance
Macbeth’s fears regarding the throne and heirs.
• A bloody child appears and mentions that no one born of a woman can hurt
Macbeth or his position as Scotland’s monarch.
• He also sees Banquo’s ghost in the vision but Macbeth is unable to decipher the
meaning behind these strange visions.
• Macbeth is informed that Macduff is in England so he decides to send assassins to
Macduff’s castle to kill his wife and sons.
Scene Two
• In this scene we are introduced to the only other female noblewoman in the play -
Lady Macduff.
• Lady Macduff feels betrayed by her husband’s unexpected escape to England
