Romeo and Juliet Act 1
Scene One
The entire play is set in Verona, Italy, and revolves around the rivalry, love and
death.
In this scene, the conflict between the Montagues and the Capulets is
demonstrated.
The boys from the house of Capulet, Sampson and Gregory, encounter boys from
the house of Montague, Balthasar and Abraham.
Before a fight breaks out between the two groups, Benvolio attempts to bring
about peace and prevent a fight.
Benvolio’s attempt to bring peace was successful until Tybalt, from the house of
Capulet, enters and worsens the situation.
Lord Montague and Capulet get involved and try to attack each other.
The Prince ends the fight and declares that if the two houses start a fight again
then the people responsible will be sentenced to death.
Benvolio blames Tybalt for starting the fight, but the conversation between the
Montagues soon drift towards Romeo’s bad mood.
Benvolio figures out that it is Romeo’s unrequited love for Rosaline that has been
bothering him, and Benvolio advises him to find another woman to love.
