Romeo and Juliet Act 1
Scene One
• The entire play is set in Verona, Italy, and revolves around the rivalry, love and
death.
• In this scene, the conflict between the Montagues and the Capulets is
demonstrated.
• The boys from the house of Capulet, Sampson and Gregory, encounter boys from
the house of Montague, Balthasar and Abraham.
• Before a fight breaks out between the two groups, Benvolio attempts to bring
about peace and prevent a fight.
• Benvolio’s attempt to bring peace was successful until Tybalt, from the house of
Capulet, enters and worsens the situation.
• Lord Montague and Capulet get involved and try to attack each other.
• The Prince ends the fight and declares that if the two houses start a fight again
then the people responsible will be sentenced to death.
• Benvolio blames Tybalt for starting the fight, but the conversation between the
Montagues soon drift towards Romeo’s bad mood.
• Benvolio figures out that it is Romeo’s unrequited love for Rosaline that has been
bothering him, and Benvolio advises him to find another woman to love.
