The Elements of Journalism Ch. 2 Summary
In Chapter 2, Kovach addresses the fact that a journalist’s main obligation is to
the truth. A journalist serves as a liaison between the news and the general public. When a
journalist delivers news, many consumers of the news believe the material to be truthful.
However, many people will agree that the concept of truth is extremely complex, and
producing truth is very rarely a simple task.
With reports from the government, Internet sources, etc., consumers of the news
are constantly being provided divergent forms of “truth.” Since the many disparate
sources of news may hold different views on what truth really is, some journalists have
