Each branch would act as a check on the power of the other two. Article i of the constitution created a congress (legislative/lawmaking power) Article ii created the office of president (defined scope of executive/enforcement power) Article iii created supreme court and permits additional federal courts (judicial/interpretive power) Bill of rights: in 1791, the first 10 amendments were added to the constitution, guarantee many liberties to individual citizens. Key ideas from chapter 1: voters in all 50 states elect representatives who go to washington, dc. c. to serve in congress, the congress is comprised of the house of representatives and the senate. The house has 435 voting members and states with large populations send more representatives. The senate has 100 members, two from each state.
