FA 30b Chapter 1: Introduction to Art History
Document Summary
The power of art and the impact of context. Art represents views which are often represented as truth. Such art can be used to reveal authority and power. Art evokes emotions of anger, pride, love, and respect, because art has multiple meanings and interpretations. Since context constantly changes, interpretations of artistic eras change as well. One such example is the greater emphasis placed on women artists who were widely ignored until the 1960s. Many pieces of art are beautiful and display technical prowess and skill, but these are most certainly not the only criteria on what makes art what it is. Art does not require hands on involvement by the artist, though it usually does contain this element. The idea and vision of an artist can be equally important. Art can be small, funny, subject to numerous interpretations, mass produced, and idea based. Aesthetics is the study of art theory, beauty, and the meaning of art.
