The age of positivism: realism, impressionism, and the pre raphaelites, 1848 1885. Realism in the 1840s and 1850s: painting contemporary social conditions. Gustave courbet"s the burial at ornans is a massive painting that lacks idealization and was exhibited at the salon. Courbet was good friends with members of the literary avant garde, including both jules champfleury and charles baudelaire. Champfleury influenced the artist towards the style of realism. The picture lacks a compositional structure that emphasizes figures, instead each figure is presented equally. These characteristics shocked the viewers at the salon. Life as an artist was exhibited in the artist"s own exhibition near the salon in protest of the salon and government"s tastes. Here the artist promotes his own style of realism.
