The earliest recorded indonesian state was the trade empire of srivijaya initially based in. Trade allowed for the spread of hinduism and islam. Arab and se asian merchants accepted and converted to islam for financial advantages. The melaka straits were the center of trade and the safest routes. Se asia has always been distinctive in its closer approach to gender equality than any other major culture, and rejected the islamic principle of purdah, unlike hindus in many northern regions. Most areas of se asia saw women as dominant, if not superior, to men. Khmer was created on cambodia"s great lake (tonie sap), where rulers began to construct a temple complex at angkor. Vietnam was heavily influenced by chinese culture, largely due to han and tang control, but regained independence after the fall of the tang. Vietnam"s power and expansion was rooted in their fervent nationalism and aggressive behavior against invaders. The capital of burma was pagan in the irrawaddy valley.
