Most fundamental principle - sovereign equality of member states; states do not recognize any higher government authority. Equality in legal states not size, military power, or wealth each state 1 vote in general. Security council unequal w/ 5 permanent members w/ veto power. All member states refrain from threat or use of force against territorial integrity or political independence of any state or inconsistent w/ un purposes; settle international disputes through peaceful means. Obligation of member states to fulfill all obligations assumed under charter (pacta sunt servanda - treaties must be carried out); payment of annual dues.
