Document Summary

The internal pool of a substance is the amount of that substance in the ecf. Substances may be removed from the body via. Salt is not synthesized in the body, so maintaining a stable [salt] in the body fluids depends entirely on a balance b/w salt ingestion and excretion. To maintain stable balance of an ecf constituent, its input must equal its output. When body input = body output of a substance stable balance. Input of various plasma constituents is poorly controlled or not controlled at all. Body water is distributed between the icf and the ecf compartments. Two major fluid compartments: icf and ecf. Proportion of h2o in the major fluid compartments. Icf = of total body h2o. Ecf = of total body fluid. Lymph= fluid being returned from the interstitial fluid to the plasma via the lymphatic system. Transcellular fluid= small, specialized fluid volumes secreted by specific cells into a particular body cavity for a specialized function.
