The respiratory system participates in external respiration. 1) ventilation: air is alternately moved into and out of the lungs so that air can be exchanged between the atmosphere and alveoli. 2) o2 and co2 exchange b/w the air in alveoli and the blood in pulmonary capillaries via diffusion. 3) blood transports o2 and co2 b/w the lungs and the tissues. 4) o2 and co2 are exchanged b/w the tissue cells and blood via diffusion across systemic capillaries. Inspired atmospheric air is humidified and warmed by the respiratory airways before it is expired. Prevents alveolar linings from drying out (gases cannot exchange across dry membranes) Maintain normal acid-base balance by altering amount of h+-generating co2 exhaled. Removes, modifies, activates, or inactivates various materials passing through pulmonary circulation. The respiratory airways conduct air between the atmosphere and the alveoli. Airways: nasal passages pharynx trachea larynx glottis l&r bronchi l&r lungs. The gas-exchanging alveoli are thin-walled, inflatable air sacs encircled by pulmonary capillaries.
