The creation of textures often were more important than development of melodies. Alto sax player who changed keys freely when improvising. Played completely freely, as melodies were completely disconnected from one another. Didn"t play with modern jazz swing feeling. People who listen to him say that the feeling of his music is uplifting. When chords changed, there was a new set of notes that the improviser was restricted to playing. Not all of this jazz was necessarilly swinging. Guided by scales, but many still considered it free jazz. Most influential pianist in jazz after bud powell.
