(neoclassicism) A claim of nobility began to be viewed more as a sign of vanity than as a natural right to rule. Challenge from peasents and serfs who lived and worked on agricultural estates (most control) Famine, taxes and other econ pressures upon peasants landworkers. Peasants brought their grievances before village assemblies. File lawsuits against the lords, often with the assistance of the royal government. Bourgeoisie - untitled people of property in town, merchants, financiers.
