In life"s hierarchy of organization, new properties emerge at each level. From population to biosphere, there is interaction. Emergent properties: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts , cells are where life emerges . Cells are structural and functional units of life. Systems biology: the study of a biological system and the modeling of its dynamic behavior by analyzing the interactions among its parts. Sunlight produces of flow of energy: sun -> producers -> consumers -> outflow of heat. Consumers obtain co2 through consumption of food (producers) Chemical energy is transferred through a cycle: producers -> consumers -> decomposers (and back again) The unity of life is based on dna and a common genetic code.
