BIOL-3150 Chapter Notes - Chapter 18: Crisis Management, Nerve Plexus, Autonomic Nervous System
Document Summary
Chapter 18, autonomic nervous system of the motor ns. Autonomic nervous system: processes regulated below conscious level, work reflexively and without our awareness, works constantly with somatic to regulate body organs and maintain homeostasis. Somatic motor neuron axon extends from cns to effector. Pre-ganglionic neuron has pre-ganglionic axon that projects to ganglionic neuron. Ganglionic neuron has post-ganglionic axon that projects to effector. Components of autonomic ns: preganglionic neuron: released ach, myelinated, large diameter, faster than the postganglionic neuron due to myelination and larger diameter, myelination and size of axon increases speed, postganglionic neuron: varied nts, unmyelinated, smaller diameter. Anatomic difference between parasympathetic and sympathetic: autonomic ganglion where synapse occurs located in different areas in sympathetic and parasympathetic, preganglionic differences, sympathetic: lots of branches on presynaptic side, parasympathetic: longer axon, postganglionic differences, sympathetic: longer, para: shorter. We need to activate a lot of different things: more nerve plexus with sympathetic than parasympathetic.
