Avery, macleod and mccarthy = isolate the transforming principle. Goal: figure out at what point the transforming principle can be destroyed. Destroyed components of heat killed strain one by one. Result: dna was destroyed and the specimen lived. When transformed the r strain makes same outer coat as virulent strain through enzyme rxn and becomes s strain. Function of phage protein and nucleic acid in reproductive process of a bacterial cell. Result: dna went into bacteria (subsequently into the progeny) while protein stayed out. Dna = nitrogenous base + sugar + phosphate.
