Document Summary

Any base pair change in part of dna molecule. Changes in dna sequence are passed to daughter cells. If there is genetic mutation in one type of cell (ex. Skin cells) the mutation will only be seen in the daughter cells of that type of cell. Wont see mutation in say a liver cell. Downside: lead to tumor development or altered cell function. Changes can be seen from generation to generation. Basis for transmission of genetic diversity and evolution. Organisms get copies of chromosomes from meiosis in every cell so if there is mutation in the dna sequences here, it will be seen on a bigger scale. These mutations can happen in the germ line or somatic cells. Point mutation: alteration of one a single nucleotide. Frameshift mutations: will cause reading frame to shift. Can cause frameshift mutations by adding one or more nucleotide. Changes all nucleotides following the frameshift mutation3.
