Document Summary
Walter cannon"s observed that organisms seek to maintain homeostasis, a state of physiological equilibrium or stability. A drive is a hypothetical, internal state tension that motivates an organism to engage in activities that should reduce this tension. When individuals experience a dive, they"re motivated to pursue actions that will lea to drive reduction. An incentive is an external goal that has the capacity to motivate behavior. Drive theories emphasize how internal states of tension push people in certain directions. Incentive theories emphasize how external stimuli pull people in certain directions. Social motives: achievement, af liation, autonomy, dominance, order. The hypothalamus is a tiny structure involve in the regulation of a variety of biological needs (control hunger) Lateral hypothalamus (lh) controls interest in eating. Ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (vmh) controls the ability to recognize fullness. Lh & vmh are the brain"s on-off switch (past) Arcuate nucleus and the paraventricular nucleus play a large role in the modulation of hunger.
