Chapter 1: theoretical perspectives on s ocial development. Critical questions: biological vs. environmental influences, roles children play in own development, appropriate unit to study social development (individual, group of 2, etc. ) Continuous or discontinuous development: development is basically continuous but interspersed with transitional periods. Is social behavior the result of situation or child: universal across cultures, vary across historical errors, related to other developmental domains, motor, cognitive, emotional, how important are mothers, all family members + peers. No pediatrics, psychiatry, philosophy, demography, anthropology, etc. Case study: genie: locked in room by father, could not socialize, silent, remarkable nonverbal communication skills, never able to master grammar or control violent outbursts. Theories serves 2 functions: organize and integrate existing information into coherent accounts. Lead to testable hypotheses: modern theories are more focused, explain specific aspects of social development. Set groundwork for effects of early experience in family, aggression, morality, gender, and attachment.
